Using The Ual Libraries For Research - 727 Words

PPD: I have learnt the value of using the UAL libraries for research for my essay. I feel that it is a great resource to allow me access to books that would deepen my understanding of the assignment by borrowing books about criticising photography. It allowed me to explore many themes, I found that looking at industry professionals’ work that could help me to broaden my argument and find unexpected avenues to research and inform my ideas. I would also like to improve with the essay how I find quotes, as I find it hard to sift through all the books in order to find points that would be relevant in the writing process. I learnt that online research is often not credible because of the originality of the sources but could be useful as a starting point. I found some of the lectures useful in thinking about the different aspects of the writing process because without them there would have been things that I would have not considered. I found Showstudio, an incredible help because it g ave me direct insight into the details of Nick Knight’s process towards a final image and also different aspects of Alexander McQueen’s vision. I enjoyed analysing an image that did not have much information written about it because it was only produced in March this year and so I really had to rely on my on dissection of the image and quotes to bring out thought provoking points. Even though there are many reports there are also many cases that are not reported. Elder abuse in nursing homes has grown at an alarming rate and not being reported and I firmly believe that the punishment should be increased for these abusers such as licenses being pulled and state stepping in more to investigate. There are many different types of abuse towards elders. Types of abuse are neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, and many more. There are more than an estimated 2. 1 million reports of abuse each year as found in the studies of American Psychological Association, 2011. Elderly abuse is often times overlooked especially when there is bruising of the skin. The elderly are frail and the bruises are often mistaken for normal care on a frail individual which can happen. M. Lachs and K. Pillemer, also studied the same abuse issues and reported that many physicians were un-familiar with the mandatory reporting of abuse. In fact many physicians could not identify a case of elder abuse (1995-2006). Neglect is one of the most common reports of abuse in nursing homes. Neglect occurs when a caregiver fails to take care of a patient the way they should. In example, a caregiver does not change an elderly person every two hours. Instead the elder is only changed every 4 hours. This can cause bed sores. Bed sores break down the skin and when urine and feces enter the wound the patient can become ill and even die. Another type of abuse is physical abuse. Physical abuse occurs when a care giver hits a patient. Physical abuse towards the elderly can have grave consequences as well. The elder are very fragile and when hit can easily cause broken bones and even death. It is very hard for the elderly to recover because they are so fragile. Many physicians do not recognize the signs of abuse. The injuries are often mistaken for common issues with fragile elder patients. This means most cases of abuse are not reported and the abuser continues the acts. For cases that are reported the abuse usually is not punished in a meaningful way. Usually the abuser gets a slap on the wrist and in worst case scenario fired from the job just to go to another job and do the same thing. If the state would come in to the nursing homes more often or even a regular weekly basis to inspect. The state has a larger impact than expected and could put the situation under control. The abusers should have their certifications and licenses revoked and should not be able to continue their work. Doing this would leave the patients with care givers who actually care and want to do the job correctly. There are many, many reports every year on abuse in nursing homes. The reports to not even come close to the actual number of cases since not all are reported. Abuse in nursing homes is a very serious matter and should be treated as such. War Surviving the Fires of Hatred Essay Valentin Klinghoffer was a Polish Jew who spent the last 7 years of World War II in the Buchenwald concentration camp in Nazi Germany. He grew up in Krakow, the son of a Jewish cobbler father and Silesian mother. He learned his fathers trade and dreamed of one day leaving Poland and immigratingji to America where free speech was guaranteed any great things were taking place. At university he studied logic and jurisprudence. In 1939 he was abruptly taken from his home in Krakow when the Nazis occupied Poland. The Nazis rounded up large groups of Poles, and forced Polish Jews to wear a yellow Star of David on their clothing plainly proclaiming, or rather crudely labeling them Jude or Jew. Wearing his own star Klinghofer found himself in a packed box car bound for God knows where. Buchenwald camp was a site where prisoners were forced to work producing buttons, shoes and textiles. The camp was overseen by German SS officers and was frequently used by the Gestapo for torturing prisoners. Some time after Klinghofers arrival, but no sooner than he was able to cement his reputation as a highly skilled and productive worker, the camp was visited by one of the most feared Nazis, Obergruppenfuhrer Reinhard Heydrich. Heydrich had inspected the camp closely. As he walked the rows of prisoners lined up at the barbed wire fence at the perimeter of the common yard he came face to face with Klinghoffer. As a skilled bootmaker, and his reputation in the camp beamed from him, Klinghoffer was promoted by Heydrich to foreman of the boot factory workers, due to praise lavished upon him by his Nazi captors who had daily witnessed the production of finely crafter leather boots for German officers. Praise was rarely given to prisoners but the product of Klinghofers toils was valued by the SS, and the skilled young boot Artist in the camp was widely spoken of. The difficulty and importance of measuring quality of hire What metrics really matter to recruiters and hiring managers and to the companies that employ them? The truth is, as a hiring manager you may be meeting certain predetermined targets that certainly look good, but are you crushing it where it really matters- namely, the quality of your hires? Sure, on the surface you can be meeting your company’s staffing needs and finding quality candidates for all open positions, but how do you know if they- and you by association- are adding real value to the organization?According to a recent article by Workable, â€Å"Quality of hire (QoH) measures the value new hires bring to a company†¦ In this context, ‘value’ usually means how much a new hire contributes to their company’s long-term success by completing tasks, improving their work and helping others†¦ Unsurprisingly, quality of hire is at the top of the list of useful performance KPIs. According to  LinkedIn’s 2016 global trends report, itâ€⠄¢s a priority for 40% of big companies worldwide (and 45% of small businesses). Efficiency recruiting metrics, like  time to fill  and  time to hire,  are trending up, but there are obvious reasons for why quality of hire is still so important†¦ Quality of hire is what makes the recruiting process worthwhile.†Okay, so it’s clear that quality of hire is important, but how can it be measured effectively? The truth is, it isn’t such an easy thing to quantify. You can really only measure QoH after a hire has been working for at least a few months- if not more.  And, in general, â€Å"quality† is a vague term that’s hard to define. The Society for Human Resource Management recently published an article that referred to quality of hire as the elusive Holy Grail of recruiting. According to the article,â€Å"Quality-of-hire metrics are critical to understanding the effectiveness of your company’s hiring process but, for many, figurin g out how to define the measurement is a challenge.†So, now you know that quality of hire is a critical recruitment metric and that it can be a very tricky thing to measure- but that shouldn’t inspire you to ignore it. Use the following strategies to measure QoH in your organization’s recruitment efforts, to help you get a firm handle on whether or not you’re contributing meaningfully to your company’s bottom line.MetricsWhen you’re ready to get serious about measuring QoH, you’ll need to determine which metrics you’re going to use. But, other calculations c an be less transparent. Your job will then be to track information about new hires via surveys. You can use the above-mentioned metrics to run a QoH assessment for each individual new employee, or you can create aggregate or average scores, which can span things like departments or various hiring timeframes. It all depends on what you’re interested in analyzing (i.e., per-hire Qo H vs. QoH trends across teams and over time, etc.). QoH measures can also be made in increments- for example, a new hire’s score can be measured at 6 months, a year, and 2 years from their start date.Once you decide to make QoH assessment a priority in your organization and have your metrics and data collection processes in place, you can analyze and manipulate the data in countless ways, depending upon your company’s needs, and once you incorporate QoH into your recruitment performance metrics you can count on seeing tangible benefits- both to your institution and to its new hires. Safety and security need is the second stage of this model. Under this stage, an individ ual tries to secure their job, health and neighboring associates. Social need is the third stage in this Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory. Individuals try to achieve social recognition within this stage. In terms of a workplace, an employee tries to achieve social recognition from their sub-ordinates and colleagues. ... It can enhance the performance of the employees. According to Frederic Herzberg, the individual needs of a people should be satisfied within an organization. According to this theory, there are two influences or degrees that can affect the level of perception of an individual within the workplace of a company. Motivators or satisfiers and hygiene factors or dissatisfiers are considered as specific influences. Nature of work is an important motivation driver. Several positive aspects can fulfill the job satisfaction of an employee (Wood, Zeffane, Fromholtz, Wiesner, Morrison & Seet, 2013). Achievement of career objectives, social recognition within workplace, job promotion, potential opportunity for individual development within organization and level of responsibili ty are considered as the motivating factors that can enhance the efficiency and performance level of an employee. On the other hand, several hygiene or dissatisfiers factors can upset employees. It has several negative consequences on the business productivity of an organization. Inadequate workplace environment, poor developed policy and unjustified salary distribution can be considered as the dissatisfiers factors. Poor organizational policy can affect the motivation and performance level of an employee (Baldonado, 2008). Needless paperwork or bureaucracy within an organization can be considered as a major barrier for a particular assigned job. In addition, poor workplace environment or employee discrimination can create several workplace conflicts.
